Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

The birth of DuVernay's daughter took place on the 24th of August 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay was inspired to follow her passion of the arts by her aunt Denise when she was a girl. The aunt who was a night shift nurse, let her explore art and literature as well as the theater in the daylight. DuVernay was exposed to the movie of 1961 West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay recognized that art is a powerful tool to promote activism. DuVernay was also taught by her mother, with a conscience for social issues, and pushed DuVernay to express herself through art. Although DuVernay grew up in Compton with her parents, she was a summer resident in Lowndes County Alabama where her father's family lived for generations. DuVernay's Dad recalled seeing the Civil Rights Movement's historic march on the Edmund Pettus Bridge near the town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay was inspired by her summers in Alabama to help inspire her next film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was awarded her high school diploma at Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. DuVernay went to the University of California Los Angeles following her graduation, and received qualifications in English and African American Studies. DuVernay began to develop an interest in broadcast journalism as a student. As an intern, she worked for CBS News at the time of the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalls being asked to examine the garbage at the home of a member of jury. Following her disappointment with journalistic work by the assignments she was given she decided to pursue an interest in public relations. DuVernay got a job right from college, working as a young publicist for a studio. The DuVernay Agency is her first agency for public relations. Her agency launched numerous promotional and lifestyle networks that include Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
